A Private Walking Tour of Heidelberg, Just for Your Group

Who the private tour is for

The private tour takes up to five people. That covers most of the groups who ask us about it:

• Families. All ages are welcome. With no other guests to keep pace with, the walk can slow down, pause for a bench, or skip ahead when attention runs out.
• Couples. Two people, one guide, and a relaxed walk through the Altstadt with room for real conversation.
• Friends travelling together. Your own jokes, your own detours, and no need to make small talk with a group you just met.
• Small company groups and visiting colleagues. A simple, sociable way to show international guests the city between meetings, all in English.

The price is the same whether you are two or five, so for a group of four or five it works out cheaper per head than booking the shared tour.

• About two hours on foot through Heidelberg's Altstadt with a local guide.
• The same 9 major stops as the shared tour, plus mini stops and bonus stops when the pace allows.
• A custom pace: linger where you love, skip what you don't.
• An optional café stop and photo recommendations along the way.
• At the last stop, everything you need to know about the castle: how to get there, what to see inside, and the spots most visitors walk straight past.

The price covers guiding and commentary. Entry tickets to buildings, museums or the Bergbahn, and any food or drink, are not included.

Private tour vs. shared tour

Both tours walk the same route and tell the same stories. The only real difference is who else is walking with you.

How booking and the 50% deposit work

1. Open the booking calendar on the homepage and choose the private tour.
2. Pick a date and time. All times are Heidelberg local time.
3. Pay the 50% deposit, €50, by card. Payment runs through Stripe, so your card details never reach us. Your place is confirmed the moment the deposit goes through.
4. Pay the remaining €50 in cash, in euro, on the day of the tour.

Slots are limited and go first-come, first-served: whoever pays the deposit first gets the slot.

Where we meet

The meeting point is at the Rathaus on Marktplatz (Marktplatz 10, 69117 Heidelberg), by the fountain near the main door.

Marktplatz sits in the middle of the Old Town, a short walk from most Altstadt hotels. Give yourself a few minutes' margin so the tour can start on time.

The route

The private tour follows the same route as every tour we run: 9 major stops through the Altstadt, a few mini stops in between, and bonus places when time is on our side.

1. Alte Brücke. The Old Bridge (Karl-Theodor-Brücke) over the Neckar, with the river and the old town around you.
2. Rathaus Heidelberg. The town hall on Marktplatz, the political heart of the city.
3. Heiliggeistkirche. The Church of the Holy Spirit, which once held a divided altar between Catholics and Protestants.
4. Hauptstrasse. The long pedestrian main street, with stories in its cafés and side alleys.
5. University Museum. Inside the oldest university in Germany, founded in 1386, including the old student jail.
6. Old Library. Where centuries of manuscripts and archives still live.
7. Jesuitenkirche. A Baroque church that most visitors walk straight past.
8. Fraternity House. A look at the student societies of old Heidelberg.
9. Bergbahn. The funicular station up to the castle, where the tour ends with recommendations for your visit.

Your guide

Every tour is led by Rythyma Sharma, who came to Heidelberg for her Master's degree and never wanted to leave. She has lived here for four years and has led 50+ tours so far.

In her words: "This city has layers — the romantic postcard version tourists see, and the real story underneath. I'm here to show you both." On a private tour that means more time for your own questions, not a script recited to a crowd.

What to bring, and a few practical tips

• Comfortable walking shoes. The Old Town is cobblestone throughout.
• Cash in euro for the remaining 50%, paid on the day.
• Clothes for the weather. The tour runs in light rain, so a jacket helps. In heavy rain you can reschedule to any other available date on the calendar.
• A camera or phone, and your questions.
• Pushchairs and slower walkers: let us know at tour@exploring-heidelberg.de before the day so the pace can be planned around your group. Cobblestones make wheels hard work in places.
• Language: tours are in English only. You just need to be comfortable following English.
