If you searched for a free walking tour in Heidelberg, you have probably found two kinds of offer: tours that cost nothing to book and run on tips, and small tours with a fixed price. We run the second kind. This page explains both, plainly, so you can pick the one that fits your trip.
How "free" walking tours work
A free walking tour is free to book, not free to take. The guide is usually paid through tips collected at the end. So the word "free" really means "pay what you think it was worth".
That model has real advantages:

- You decide the price after you have seen the tour.
- It suits travellers on a tight budget who still want a guided start to the city.
And a few things worth knowing before you go:
- Because the guide earns per head, groups are often on the larger side, which can make it harder to hear and to ask questions.
- Most guests are expected to tip, and some people find the moment at the end awkward.
- Since you don't pay ahead, the final cost is simply whatever you choose to give.
None of this makes tip-based tours bad. Many are run by guides who care a lot. It just helps to know what you are signing up for.
What we do instead: a small group at a fixed price
Exploring Heidelberg runs a shared walking tour at €27 per person, with never more than 6 guests. If you would rather have the guide to yourselves, the private walking tour is €100 for your group (up to 5 people). Both take about 2 hours, both are in English only, and both cover the same route.
The route has 9 major stops through the Altstadt: the Alte Brücke, the Rathaus, the Heiliggeistkirche, the Hauptstrasse, the University Museum with the old student jail, the Old Library, the Jesuitenkirche, a fraternity house, and finally the Bergbahn, where you get recommendations for the castle and what to see inside. Your guide is Rythyma Sharma. In Rythyma's words: "I came to Heidelberg for my Masters degree and never wanted to leave." With six people or fewer, the tour works more like a conversation than a talk to a crowd.
Booking works like this: you pay a 50% deposit by card when you book, and the remaining 50% in cash on the day. There is no tip expected on top.
